1Password Will Support Passkeys Starting in Early 2023

1Password, a well-known service for managing passwords, announced today that it will begin supporting passkeys in early 2023. Passkeys will enable users to sign in to supported websites and applications without having to use a password.Biometric authentication on trusted devices is used to verify your identity instead, and because passwords are removed from the equation, they cannot be hacked or compromised.

Apple added passkey support to iOS 16, iPadOS 16, tvOS 16, and macOS Ventura. Passkeys are synced across devices using iCloud Keychain for convenience and redundancy.Apple’s implementation of passkeys will be able to work with non-Apple devices by scanning a QR code and authenticating with your iPhone. Apple has been working with FIDO Alliance members Google and Microsoft to ensure passkey interoperability.

1Password argues that its approach to passkeys is superior to Apple’s single-ecosystem approach because 1Password’s passkeys can be used anywhere, rather than requiring workarounds like QR-code scanning.
