iOS 16.1 to Be Announced: Expected New Features, How to Install It

Apple has reportedly confirmed that iOS 16.1 will be released as a free update on October 24, which means it may appear as a download option for users in India on Monday night. iOS 16.1 will work on all the same devices currently capable of running iOS 16, which means all iPhones with the A11 Bionic SoC and above, starting with the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. iOS 16.1 will include the usual bug fixes and behind-the-scenes improvements, but some major features of iOS 16 that aren’t ready at launch are also expected.

iPhone users can navigate to Settings > General > Software Update to check for iOS 16.1 on their device, or wait for the prompt (if they have automatic updates enabled).

iOS 16.1 features

iOS 16.1 will introduce some very noticeable new features, most notably Live Activity, a notification that can be pinned to a user’s lock screen to show real-time updates on an ongoing activity. These might include sports scores, breaking news, or even status updates for delivery applications. The Live Activities API will allow third-party app developers to create integrations with iOS lockscreens and even dynamic islands on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max devices.

iCloud Shared Photo Library was released in the first preview of iOS 16. This feature will allow users using iCloud Family Sharing to save photos and videos directly to the joint library. Up to six family members can access this photo library and choose which existing photos and videos to add to it.

In iOS 16.1, the much-anticipated battery percentage icon also returns in the form of a more useful avatar that actually provides a visual indication of battery level.

Matter, the emerging smart home and IoT device communication standard, will be supported starting with iOS 16.1. This helps spur adoption of smart home accessories, creating a unified ecosystem that is easy to manage and add.

India may not have clean energy charging yet, but this will allow users in variable energy countries to choose to prioritize access to electricity when the grid is powered by clean, renewable energy.

Some default iOS apps will also be slightly tweaked. If users don’t want to use the wallet app, they will be able to delete it. The wallpaper settings and screenshot editing UI are also expected to be slightly improved.

The current iOS version is 16.0.3. Apple introduced iOS 16 when it launched the iPhone 14 series in early September, with a major overhaul of the lock screen UI, the introduction of lock screen widgets, the ability to edit iMessages, improved search in the email app, more Siri commands, Text recognition in video, a fitness app that works even without an Apple Watch, and multiple bug fixes. Incremental releases since then have also largely focused on eliminating bugs and improving security.

It will also be visible on smaller and lower-resolution screens of eligible iPhone models that cannot be displayed in iOS 16.

Which iPhone models support iOS 16

iOS 16.1 will be compatible with the recently launched iPhone 14 series, which includes the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The iPhone 13 series models are also eligible: iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are still popular and widely available in India.

Apple’s iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, as well as iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max, will also receive updates to the latest version of iOS.

The earliest eligible devices are the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus. The more affordable iPhone SE (2020) and iPhone SE (2022) will also be able to run iOS 16.1. For the first time since the release of iOS 13, Apple dropped support for the iPhone 6S and even the last iPod touch models.

How to install iOS 16.1

Installing iOS 16.1 should be as easy as clicking a few buttons on the screen. Some might jump in as soon as an update becomes available, while others might wait days or weeks so unexpected bugs can be detected and eliminated.

All users are advised to back up their data using iCloud or PC/Mac and online features available in several applications. The best way to protect your data is to make active backups in case anything goes wrong.
Make sure you have enough space for the update. Older iPhones tend to have less storage space available. Those running out of space have to delete some data or apps for the update process to take effect.
Charge your iPhone to at least 80% and make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi before starting the download.
You can quickly “download and install” the iOS 16.1 update, or you can schedule the update or get a reminder later (if less disruptive).
Reboot and click on the steps that may appear on the screen to configure new options or update your preferences. Then, iOS 16.1 is ready to use on your iPhone.
