Mac revenue to be “significantly down” year over year in December quarter

Apple CFO Luca Maestri said on today’s earnings call that Mac revenue will take a big hit in the first fiscal quarter of 2023. Maestri, who is providing guidance for earnings for the December quarter, said Mac sales in the next quarter will be down year-over-year due to a strong Max lineup in December 2021.

Apple unveiled the M1 Pro and M1 Max 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models in October 2021, marking the debut of new products as they are the first Apple silicon versions of larger Mac laptops. The new MacBook Pro models include faster chips and a thorough design that makes them appealing to consumers and spurring sales.

There won’t be an equivalent launch this year. Rumors suggest we could get 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models and new versions of the new Mac mini by the end of the year, but the focus will be on a simple chip update without changing the design. Macs released in late 2022 may also be subject to some of the same supply constraints that affect Macs throughout 2022.

Q4 2022 saw a significant increase in Mac sales thanks to the June release of the M2 MacBook Air. Apple said the Mac brought in $11.5 billion, up $2.5 billion year over year. 2022 will be a strong year for the Mac, with Apple generating $40.1 billion in total revenue from Mac sales.
