The Google Pixel tablet is something to look forward to… well, a tablet from Google, the clue is in the name, isn’t it? It was first announced at Google IO 2022.
This was completely unexpected, as there had been no previous indication that Google was working on a new product other than job ads. But Google has now not only confirmed that it’s working on one, it’s even shown images of the Pixel tablet and shared the first details.
Since then, the company has shown off the Pixel tablet again at the Google Pixel 7 launch event. It’s still not a full announcement, but it gives us a good idea of what to expect.
Well, below you’ll find everything we’ve heard about the Google Pixel tablet so far, including what Google told us and various leaks. We’ll also update this post whenever we hear anything new.
Google Pixel Tablet release date and price
Google has confirmed it’s targeting a Pixel tablet sometime in 2023, so it’s going to be a while before you can buy one.
The company couldn’t be more specific than that, but we can educated guesses on when we’ll see it, as Google tends to release new hardware at two points of the year. First up is Google IO, which almost always takes place in May.
Then there’s the release of the new numbered Pixel models, usually in October (but not always) at the end of the year. So, in one of those events, it’s obviously time for Google to launch the Pixel tablet, but it’s entirely possible that the tablet will launch at another point in 2023.
Of the two possible options, we think October is the most likely, as Google doesn’t sound sure the list will be available before the end of 2023 — which is just the company’s goal. So there may be a lot of work to be done.
As of now, we don’t know how much the tablet will cost. We can’t even really guess because the company hasn’t launched any other tablets recently, and we don’t know how high-end the Google Pixel tablet is.
Google Pixel Tablet confirmed information
Google has shared some images of the Pixel Tablet, two of which you can see above and two of which you can see below.
The slate shown here is white, with a curved back, a “premium nano-ceramic finish,” sizable bezels around the screen, and a single-lens camera on the front and back.
Design-wise — kind of like a Google Home Hub without a kickstand — we think this might be a mid-range tablet rather than a high-end one, so it might be more of a base iPad competitor 10.2 or iPad Air (2022), while Not the iPad Pro 11 or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra.
That said, Google has confirmed that it will use the same Tensor G2 chipset as the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, so it should have reasonable power.
Of course, we also know that Pixel tablets will run Android — specifically Android 12L, which is designed for larger-screen devices. Being a Google device, it’s also sure to get a slew of software updates — and get them in time.
The Pixel tablet is also designed to be used with a charging speaker dock, which you can see in the image below.
This turns the tablet into a smart home device, more like a Google Home Hub or Nest Hub Max. As the name suggests, this both charges the Pixel tablet and provides better speakers than the tablet itself.
The Pixel tablet is apparently easy to dock and undock using magnets, and this charging speaker dock is built to keep the Pixel tablet useful at home, both as a flat-screen display and as a smart home display.
Google Pixel Tablets leaks and rumors
Otherwise, we’re in the realm of leaks and rumors, where we’ve seen Google tablets certified to support the stylus so far — so it’s likely that the Pixel tablets will.
Other than that, we can speculate that it might have the same 50MP rear camera as the Pixel 6, since Google doesn’t change the camera hardware it uses that often, and this is the new sensor in the series.
It may not get the smartphone camera experience, though, as the camera app code (opens in a new tab) points to the missing feature. Obviously there may not be 4K video recording, or some features like slow motion of video or audio scaling.
We’ve also heard rumors that the tablet will be a fairly low-spec, affordable tablet with an expected 4GB of RAM. It may also miss GPS and cellular connectivity.
The leak mentions 128GB and 256GB storage options and a 10.95-inch screen size – the leak also suggests the tablet is in internal testing as of September 2022.
It’s also possible that Google has inadvertently revealed more about the software running on the Pixel tablet: It doesn’t look like much, but we’ll take it.
