Microsoft Excel has unveiled an absolutely mind-blowing new feature

Your Microsoft Excel spreadsheets may soon be more dynamic than ever, thanks to a potentially huge breakthrough for the company.

A new Excel update will allow the spreadsheet software to insert images directly into cells, making them, for the first time, part of a worksheet rather than just floating on top of it.

Microsoft says this new feature should make your Excel worksheets more personal and customizable, bringing a whole new dimension to your work.

In the official Microsoft 365 roadmap(opens in new tab), the company notes that in addition to inserting images directly into cells, the new “IMAGE” feature will give users a range of additional customization options.

Users will be able to move and resize cells, sort and filter, and even manipulate images in Excel sheets.

Exactly how this will work in practice is unclear, as the feature is still listed as “in development” for now. However, its projected general availability date is December 2022, which means we should hear more about how it works soon.

Microsoft says the feature will be available to everyone on desktop, web, Mac, and Android when it rolls out.

The news is the latest update to Microsoft Excel, designed to make the software more engaging and user-friendly as it looks to help encourage greater online collaboration across teams in an era of hybrid work.

Recently, the company said it would be introducing “@mentions” in Excel to make your collaboration on spreadsheets smoother than ever.

@mentions allow users to tag their colleagues or colleagues both inside and outside the organization. These tags can be requests to edit, add more information, or just clarify a point, but can also be used to create, assign, and track tasks in the workbook.

The company also recently included the ability to add hyperlinks to comments added to a spreadsheet, rather than copying and pasting from plain text as before.
