Some iOS 16 Users Continue to Face Unaddressed Bugs and Battery Drain Two Weeks After Launch

Today is exactly two weeks before Apple releases iOS 16 to the public. In addition to a personalized lock screen, major changes to Messages, and new features for Maps, the update has uncovered quite a few bugs, performance issues, battery drain, and more.

After a major iOS update, it’s normal for some users to report issues with the new update, but such reports usually subside within a few days of release. Things are different this year, as iOS 16 has a lot of bugs reported by users almost every day.

The initial release of ‌iOS 16‌ is iOS 16.0 for all supported iPhones, while the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro offer a day-one update to iOS 16.0.1 that fixes some issues with the latest iPhones. Last week, Apple released iOS 16.0.2, which addresses issues like camera shake and annoying copy and paste prompts on the iPhone 14 Pro. Despite the iOS 16.0.1 and iOS 16.0.2 updates, users are still facing several unresolved bugs. Here are a few:

  • Slow and sometimes non-functional Spotlight search
  • Excessive and abnormal battery drain
  • CarPlay issues for the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ but possibly also impacting older models on ‌iOS 16‌
  • Some iPhone displays flickering in dark spots under low brightness after updating (1,2,3,4)

We saw no sign of iOS 16.0.3 in our analysis, so it’s unclear if Apple is planning another “iOS 16” update ahead of next month’s iOS 16.1 release. Apple is currently testing iOS 16.1 with developers and public beta testers, but it may not be released until October, possibly alongside iPadOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura. Apple Support has been advising customers facing issues to restart their iPhones, and in the worst case restore, in hopes of resolving their issues.
