Global smartphone shipment rankings in 2020

Due to the global impact of the epidemic and other related factors, the shipment performance of the global smartphone industry last year was not optimistic, and there was a relatively obvious decline. According to a report released by the well-known data statistics company IDC, global smartphone shipments reached 1.29 billion units in 2020 but compared with 1.37 billion units in previous years, there was still a 5.9% decline. The consumer market has yet to recover slowly.

From a specific ranking point of view, the top three shipments and market share are still divided by old faces-Samsung, Apple, and Huawei, with shipments of 266 million, 206 million, and 189 million units, respectively.

From the data point of view, due to the impact of restrictions, Huawei’s shipments have experienced a sharp year-on-year decline of 21.5% compared with the whole of 2019, and its market share has also fallen to 14.6%. Although Samsung ranked first, it also experienced a year-on-year decline of 9.8%. Compared with the second Apple, there is still a big gap in shipments and market share, and the advantages are still obvious.

What’s more interesting is that only the second-ranked Apple among the top three has seen an increase. Compared with last year’s year-on-year increase of 7.9%, it is not easy to have a nearly 10% increase in this situation. This is also largely due to the outstanding performance of the iPhone 12 series. Thanks to the blessing of 5G, the iPhone 12 series has also promoted a lot of fruit powder iteration. This also has an impact on brands such as Samsung and Huawei. However, Samsung believes in the latest financial report that the launch of the Galaxy S21 series can stabilize its position in the high-end mobile phone market.

According to another IDC data, Apple shipped 90.19 million units in Q4 of 2020, an increase of 22.2% year-on-year, which fully proves the strong competitiveness and outstanding sales of the iPhone 12 series. As for the annual shipments ranked fourth and fifth respectively, Xiaomi and Vivo, the two have 17.6% and 1% year-on-year growth respectively.

Among them, Xiaomi’s annual growth rate is the most amazing. With the success of high-end transformation and the outstanding performance of a variety of products, Xiaomi has attracted more users’ love in mid-2020. As Xiaomi’s increased R&D investment in cameras and charging in recent years has gradually transformed into real competitiveness, Xiaomi’s shipments and market share are expected to continue to rise in 2021, setting new records.
