iPad Pro 2021 vs. iPad Pro 2022 : Should You Upgrade?

The new iPad Pro has now replaced the previous-generation model in Apple’s tablet lineup from 2021, but what’s the difference between two successive iPad Pro generations?

In April 2021, Apple introduced new iPad Pro models that added an M1 chip, Thunderbolt ports, 8GB or 16GB of RAM, up to 2TB of storage, an upgraded front-facing camera, center stage, Smart HDR 3, and expanded Dynamic range video, and a mini-LED display on the 12.9-inch model. These ‌iPad Pro‌ models are now discontinued by Apple, and prices for the devices are dropping at third-party resellers. So some customers may be weighing whether to buy the 2021 ‌iPad Pro‌ or the new 2022 model.

The 2021 and 2022 iPad Pros share the vast majority of their features, so should you consider buying or stick with the older model to save money? This breakdown also serves as a way to clearly see all the differences the new ‌iPad Pro‌ brings.

Much of the advantage of the new iPad Pro comes from the M2 chip, which is 15 percent faster on the CPU and 35 percent faster on the GPU. The chip’s 16-core Neural Engine can process 40 percent more operations per second, while providing nearly twice the memory bandwidth to help with multitasking and handling large assets. With a new media engine, ‌iPad Pro‌ can capture ProRes video for the first time and encode footage three times faster. While this may benefit some users, few have professional workflows that can take advantage of the capabilities of the ‌iPad Pro‌, and most potential customers will only need the 2021 model’s ‌M1‌ chip.

The ‌Apple Pencil‌ hover provides a new way to interact with the ‌iPad Pro‌, and the pencil is detected 12mm above the display, allowing users to see a preview of their markup before making it. This makes sketches and illustrations more precise, and text fields and icons automatically expand below “Apple Pencil.” While this may be useful to illustrators and Apple Pencil fans, it’s unlikely to be the main motivation for buying the latest model.

Overall, the ‌2022 iPad Pro‌ is a very small upgrade over the 2021 model, with the ‌M2‌ chip and ‌Apple Pencil‌ hovering being the only major changes, which means it’s hard to recommend an upgrade. Many 2021 ‌iPad Pro‌ owners may not be able to justify upgrading to the latest model, but some customers from older ‌iPad Pro‌ still have good reason to prefer the latest model, especially those who need maximum performance and use the ‌Apple Pencil‌ for heavy notes and illustrations. ‌The two ‌iPad Pro‌ models are very similar, so customers who own an older ‌iPad‌ and are looking to upgrade may prefer to look for a discounted 2021 model.
